Credit main stream media for our decline in culture, failing education, predatory advertising, celebrity trivia, and toxic politics. There is the possibility that the internet, without to much interference, can become a much better alternative. For this to happen we need to continue to fight for net neutrality, acceptance of open formats like ogg or ogv. I would argue that most information now comes from video streams, but that only a small number of people are able to make competent video. So this is a new kind of illiteracy. I think the major players like it this way and work to see that it doesn’t change.

Local TV Stations Rally to Oppose Media Transparency (1/26/2012)

In the US, corporate messages dominate. Scandinavians, for example, are much better informed, they have much better educational outcomes partly because they have a much better mix of media. US media does not support democracy. See some notes on the problem here.

Most people get their information from corporate broadcasters in video form, but few people create video. This is a kind of illiteracy, but inexpensive equipment and free software  could empower everyone.

The internet does offer a much wider choice of information sources. Concerned citizens need to see the important videos listed below.
